The University of Minnesota is committed to playing a role, in partnership with community members and organizations, to substantially improve the vitality and promise of North Minneapolis.
As a land-grant institution, the University is strongly connected to Minnesota’s communities, collaborating to share its research for the benefit of the state and its citizens through public engagement.
Public engagement means that the University applies its scholarly expertise to community problems by helping organizations and individuals respond to their changing environments, and by making the knowledge and resources created and preserved at the University accessible to the citizens of the state, the nation, and the world. In return, the University benefits from the knowledge and resources of other organizations, and integrates their needs and interests in future research, teaching, and public service agendas. In other words, connecting university research and teaching to the ‘real world.’
The University will engage with Minneapolis’ Northside community by offering a variety of specialized services, investing financial resources for economic development, and offering educational opportunities within the community. The exact mix of activities will depend upon matching community needs and desires with University resources.
