Phyllis Wheatley Community Center (PWCC) provides comprehensive quality programs in life-long learning, child development and family support for the diverse Greater Minneapolis community. PWCC, established in 1924, is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that has served over 200,000 youth and families primarily from the Sumner-Glenwood, Harrison, Near North and surrounding communities of Minneapolis. It is the oldest organization in Minnesota to continuously deliver services primarily to African Americans. “The Wheatley” opened as a settlement house and was a central gathering place for the city’s African American community, playing a historic role in this community during an era of racial segregation and discrimination. Traditionally, activities of the Center focused on youth and family development through programs of recreation, education and performing arts. Many civil and social leaders called the Wheatley House their second home, and the distinguished list of guests included Paul Robeson, Langston Hughes, Marian Anderson and W.E.B. Dubois.
Phyllis Wheatley Community Center has a long and positive relationship with NorthPoint, the University of Minnesota, Minneapolis Public Schools, Minneapolis Park and Recreation, Hennepin County and more recently, the Minneapolis Empowerment Zone and the Metropolitan Alliance of Connected Communities. PWCC views the Northside Partnership as a unifying collaborative effort that has the potential for making the kind of coordinated impact that individual agencies and small alliances cannot achieve alone. Phyllis Wheatley has a history, which continues to this day, of support and collaboration to provide services that are in the best interest of children and families in the community. We have provided quality early childhood development, academic enhancement programs, and camping experiences for African American children and youth longer than any organization on the Northside. We have valuable resources in community connections and program expertise that we are pleased to bring to the table in the proposed Northside Initiative Partnership.
